Welcome to Y4 Butterflies Class

In LKS2 we aim to develop children's independence and metacognition skills (understanding of their thought processes). Children are encouraged to use a range of self-help strategies to support themselves in their learning, to allow them to become more effective learners and prepare them for the future. (For example, using concrete apparatus in maths, using dictionaries to improve their spelling accuracy, editing their work based upon feedback from others, sharing ideas with their peers, utilising their strengths and talents, amongst other things!) Children are also encouraged to discuss their ideas and explain their reasoning for decisions, to develop a deeper level of understanding of the concepts being taught.


Team work is also a key part of our learning in LKS2. Children are given varied opportunities to collaborate with their peers, through partner and small group work. This allows them to develop their inter-personal  and social skills, again allowing them to become more effective learning and preparing them for the future. Children are encouraged to respect each other, listen carefully to the ideas of others, collaborate with each other, adapt their ideas and support each other, so that every child can achieve the best possible outcomes. 


In LKS2 we aim to provide children with a range of learning opportunities, to stimulate their interest and allow them to make progress in their skills and knowledge. Fun is at the heart of our learning and we want children to enjoy coming to school each day. 



In Butterflies class, children access either home reading books as part of the 'Accelerated reader' program or Read Write Inc books which match their colour group level.  Each term in school, the Accelerated reader children complete a STAR assessment, to determine their 'Zone of Proximal Development' (ZPD). Children are then able to access books at the level appropriate to their stage of development, which they independently choose from our class reading area. Once completing a book, children are encouraged to take a short 'quiz', to determine their comprehension of the text that they have read, before selecting another book. Children should read their home reading book for a minimum of 10 minutes each night - Please support your child with this!


Every Friday, children are also able to visit our school Library. Here they can borrow books of any reading difficulty, to be enjoyed at home with an adult. Children can also access a range of e-books, using the MYON website. Please ask if you are unsure of your child's login details. 


As part of their daily reading lessons, children are streamed into ability groups where they are able to practice a range of different skills such as retrieval, and inference and as well as developing their fluency, word understanding and skills of prediction and summary. This helps to deepen their understanding of a text that they have read.

PE Days


Butterflies will have a PE lesson each Monday with Mrs Conlin and each Thursday with the sports coaches.  Children should come to school in their kit and wear suitable footwear for each lesson.

Summer Term


We have lots of exciting learning experiences planned for Butterflies during the Summer Term

Our class novel is - The Firework-maker's Daughter by Phillip Pullman - will Lila survive her journey to the volcano and uncover the secrets to becoming a firework maker?

We will be learning all about volcanoes and have some 'explosive' experiments planned

As part of our History and RE learning we will be visiting Wakefield Cathedral - making the journey by train!

Butterflies are working really hard to learn all the skills they will need to become school's Mental health Champions - our coach has been very impressed with the sessions so far!
