Design and Technology

'Solving real and relevant  problems'

Our Design and Technology lead is Mrs Jones-Brooks

“Design is a funny word. Some people think design means how it looks.

But of course, if you look deeper, it’s really how it works.”

 Steve Jobs

“Technology makes possibilities. Design makes solutions.”

John Maeda

Why is Design Technology important at Northfield?

Design and Technology at Northfield aims to inspire children to be innovative and creative thinkers who have the appreciation of the product design process through design, make and evaluate. We want children to develop the confidence to take risks, through drafting design concepts, modelling, testing and to be reflective learners who evaluate their own and others’ work. We want our children to have an awareness of the impact that Design and Technology has on our lives and encourage children to become resourceful, enterprising citizens who will have the skills to contribute to future design advancements.

What does Design Technology look like at Northfield?

At Northfield Primary School, we value Design Technology as an important part of the children’s entitlement to a broad and balanced curriculum. Design and Technology is taught through a variety of creative and practical activities, pupils are taught the  knowledge, understanding, skills and vocabulary needed to engage in an iterative process of designing and making. We engage our children through activities which involve investigating and evaluating existing products, focussed tasks in which children develop particular aspects of knowledge and skills and then designing and making in which the children design and make ‘something’ for ‘somebody’ for ‘some purpose’. We ensure that the teaching of Design and Technology at Northfield  supports the social development of our children through the way we expect them to learn with each other.
