Communication Resource

Welcome

Northfield Communication Resource is a bespoke and enhanced mainstream setting for 5 – 11 year olds who have an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP). We meet the needs of pupils with Autism or Speech, Language and Communication Needs. Some pupils also have other SEND.

What we learn

Our curriculum follows the key elements of the mainstream school curriculum. However, we also balance this with the individual needs of each child as detailed in their EHCP.

Our curriculum includes:

  • The right challenge and support at each stage, not age, of learner.
  • A 3 step approach to development of social skills that runs simultaneously alongside cognitive development.
  • Development of ready to learn behaviours.
  • Opportunities to practise independence.
  • A focus on reading (including early reading skills) that will support learners across all their subjects, into their secondary school and beyond into life.
  • Timetabled opportunities that provide pleasurable and purposeful interactions whilst raising awareness of others in order to develop each child’s social communication and interaction.
  • Support and development of speech and language including discrete sessions and communication friendly classrooms. Both of these support the social development of children and help children to better access the curriculum.

Admission

Admissions are managed by Wakefield Council’s Special Needs Assessment and Review Team (SENART). You can contact them via senart@wakefield.gov.uk / 01924 302465. Decisions on admission are then taken by Wakefield's EHCP Panel who also consult with Wakefield Council’s SEND Delivery Manager.

Admission to the mainstream school is never a route to accessing our Resource.

Visits to the Resource are welcome. Please call to book a visit (01977) 651291.
