We have designed the year 1 & 2 curriculum to provide children with opportunities to develop independence in their learning and become confident in more formal, structured lessons. The curriculum is planned using both year 1 and year 2 outcomes. This allows children in year 2 to revisit elements of year 1 where necessary and progress at a pace which is right for them. The year 1 children are supported in small groups to access more formal lessons inline with their EYFS end points and readiness to learn. Our vision for all children is aspirational and, as we move through the year, the children will be prepared for their transition to the next year group. 

During year 1 and 2 children work on the KS1 curriculum. The children are expected to meet the year 1 and 2 outcomes by the end of the year. They are taught the following subjects:

MATHS

In Year 1/2 we plan and teach using the white rose scheme of work. This scheme of learning is designed to support a mastery approach to teaching and learning and is consistent with the aims and objectives of the National Curriculum. The children have opportunities to build competency through concrete, pictorial and abstract approaches. The children have opportunities to revisit and consolidate prior learning and build upon this, using strategies to solve problems and mathematical language to explain our reasoning.

Novel Study 

In Year 1/2 our literacy is taught through 'Novel Study'. Each term we have a key novel which provides a stimulus for our literacy lessons. Throughout Y1, children are developing their skills in transcription, oral rehearsal of sentences, and sequencing their ideas. We develop their confidence in discussing and sharing their ideas with their peers and with staff. 

The children increase their confidence in writing and are encouraged to write more detailed pieces.  The children are taught a range of SPAG objectives and are encouraged to up-level there writing using descriptive language and a range of conjunctions. 

Genres covered in Y1/2 writing may include: traditional tales, letters, instructions, setting and character descriptions, poetry and recounts.

PE

RE

We follow the Wakefield Agreed Syllabus. We cover the following units;

Spring term: How and why do we celebrate sacred times?

Summer term: How should we care for others and the world and why does it matter?

SCIENCE

In KS1 we teach science using the PKC curriculum. We cover the following units;

PSHE

PSHE Education is a planned programme of learning through which children and young people acquire the knowledge, understanding and skills they need to manage their lives – now and in the future. As part of a whole-school approach, PSHE Education develops the qualities and attributes pupils need to thrive as individuals, family members and members of society. We teach of PSHE curriculum through the Jigsaw Scheme of work. Jigsaw brings together PSHE Education, emotional literacy, mindfulness, social skills and spiritual development. A variety of teaching strategies are used and are mindful of each child’s preferred learning style. Jigsaw is designed as a whole school approach, with all year groups working on the same theme (Puzzle) at the same time. Each year the children repeat these units and build on their prior knowledge and skills.

RSHE

Jigsaw provides a comprehensive PSHE Programme which covers all the requirements of the government guidance and outcomes, and more. The Relationships and Healthy Me Puzzles (units) cover most of the aspects in the guidance but these are enhanced, revisited and foundations built throughout the Jigsaw Programme. Jigsaw’s philosophy starts by building positive self-image, a sense of identity and a healthy relationship with self, and from that starting point helps children grow healthy relationships with others. Health Education in Jigsaw embraces not only physical health but has a strong focus on mental health and emotional literacy throughout, and empowers children to be aware of their own thoughts and feelings and know how to manage and regulate these e.g.using Calm Me (mindfulness techniques).

FOREST SCHOOL

During the Summer term 2, the children have the opportunity to continue with their weekly Forest School sessions in the Forest School area.  This is an exciting way to learn in an outdoor setting and is proven to improve children’s confidence, self-esteem, and communication skills as well as them having lots of fun!  They develop skills in team work, using tools safely and learning about looking after our natural environment. During the session, the children will take part in a range of activities including den-building, wood craft, playing games and cooking on a campfire! 

What will my child need?

Forest School will happen in all weathers (unless it is VERY windy or icy). Please make sure your child has plenty of warm clothes including a jumper, gloves and a hat (sunhat in sunny weather). Lots of layers are more effective than a single thicker layer in terms of protecting from the cold.  Please make sure your child is suitably dressed to ensure they can fully enjoy the experience.
