Maths

Using concrete, pictorial and abstract methods, we explore mathematical concepts, exposing structures in a thoughtful and comprehensive way to deepen our understanding. All children in UKS2 follow a comprehensive plan. We consolidate learning from previous year groups and build upon this, using strategies to solve problems and mathematical language to explain our reasoning. We practise our efficiency in formal methods and also our ability to recall the key instant recall facts.

All these elements, along with a fantastic attitude, make us resilient mathematicians in UKS2!

English

In UKS2 we develop our love of English through our amazing novel study texts. These provide a fantastic stimulus for our writing. Whether that be a narrative based on the Fred and the gang lost in the Amazon Rainforest  or a newspaper report about the missing child on the London Eye!

We use these as not only do they give us a clear audience and purpose for our writing but also supports us in improving our SPaG skills!

PE

At Northfield Primary School, we believe that Physical Education (PE), experienced in a safe and supportive environment, is essential to ensure children attain optimum physical and emotional development and good health. We intend to deliver high-quality teaching and learning opportunities that inspire all children to succeed in physical education and in developing life skills. We want to teach children skills to keep them safe such as being able to swim.  We also want to teach children how to cooperate and collaborate with others as part of an effective team, understanding fairness and equity of play to embed life-long values. Our curriculum aims to improve the wellbeing and fitness of all children at Northfield, not only through the sporting skills taught, but through the underpinning values and disciplines PE promotes.

We follow the imoves scheme and have planned a detailed 2 year cycle which builds on previously taught skills covered throughout EYFS, KS1 and LKS2 and ensure that we cover all content across the Upper Key Stage 2 phase. Each child will be given the opportunity to participate in a wide range of sports, games and activities that will develop their understanding of rules and the importance of teamwork.

PSHE

PSHE Education is a planned programme of learning through which children and young people acquire the knowledge, understanding and skills they need to manage their lives – now and in the future. As part of a whole-school approach, PSHE Education develops the qualities and attributes pupils need to thrive as individuals, family members and members of society. We teach of PSHE curriculum through the Jigsaw Scheme of work. Jigsaw brings together PSHE Education, emotional literacy, mindfulness, social skills and spiritual development. A variety of teaching strategies are used and are mindful of each child’s preferred learning style. Jigsaw is designed as a whole school approach, with all year groups working on the same theme (Puzzle) at the same time. Each year the children repeat these units and build on their prior knowledge and skills.

Autumn 1: Being me in my world

Autumn 2:  Celebrating difference

Spring 1: Dreams and Goals

Spring 2: Healthy me

Summer 1: Relationships

Summer 2: Changing me

RSHE

Jigsaw provides a comprehensive PSHE Programme which covers all the requirements of the government guidance and outcomes, and more. The Relationships and Healthy Me Puzzles (units) cover most of the aspects in the guidance but these are enhanced, revisited and foundations built throughout the Jigsaw Programme. Jigsaw’s philosophy starts by building positive self-image, a sense of identity and a healthy relationship with self, and from that starting point helps children grow healthy relationships with others. Health Education in Jigsaw embraces not only physical health but has a strong focus on mental health and emotional literacy throughout, and empowers children to be aware of their own thoughts and feelings and know how to manage and regulate these e.g.using Calm Me (mindfulness techniques).

If you have concerns to queries in relation to the RSHE aspect of your child's education, please click the link to access the government document which details the required learning for children in the United Kingdom.

SWIMMING

Every Friday afternoon our Year 6 children attend their weekly swimming sessions at Minsthorpe Leisure Complex where they working towards their National Curriculum Requirements.

FOREST SCHOOL

Each Friday our Year 5children have the opportunity to continue with their weekly Forest School sessions in the Enchanted Garden.  This is an exciting way to learn in an outdoor setting and is proven to improve children’s confidence, self-esteem, and communication skills as well as them having lots of fun!  They develop skills in team work, using tools safely and learning about looking after our natural environment. During the session, the children will take part in a range of activities including den-building, wood craft, playing games and cooking on a campfire!

What will my child need?

Forest School will happen in all weathers (unless it is VERY windy or icy). Please make sure your child has plenty of warm clothes including a jumper, gloves and a hat (sunhat in sunny weather). Lots of layers are more effective than a single thicker layer in terms of protecting from the cold.  Please make sure your child is suitably dressed to ensure they can fully enjoy the experience.
